IN CONVERSATION WITH RICHARD STONE

Discover more about the artist Richard Stone and his sculptural works that inspired the JOSEPH AW26 runway collection.

Richard Stone is a contemporary British sculptor who works between Pietrasanta, Italy and London. He is traditionally trained through scholarships and apprenticeships in Italy, including through the tutelage of Helaine Blumenfeld OBE.

Richard combines traditional sculptural forms and themes and contemporary and historical symbols and motifs, creating works that oscillate and transcend easy categorisation.

JOSEPH’s Creative Director, Mario Arena, was drawn to Richard’s work for its exploration of how solid materials can be reimagined through fluidity and movement. In this sense, both Richard Stone’s work and the AW26 collection are ‘finding form where form does not exist’.

“Fashion and art as collaboration are long withstanding, because the power of fashion and art to blur boundaries perpetually presents new opportunities to reimagine. For AW26 l’ve continued this approach with the theme of ‘finding form where form does not exist’ to present a dynamic new collection with form, flow, texture and colour at the centre. This is decidedly inspired by the sculptural approach of British Sculptor, Richard Stone.”

“It’s always thrilling when art transcends different approaches to creativity and creates something classic, but new. No less than with fashion where people create their own identities and express themselves visually each day. To have found inspiration by JOSEPH in my approach to sculpture, and to see it brought to life in stunning womenswear pieces for AW26, is wonderful.”

– Richard Stone, Sculptor and Fellow, Royal Society of Sculptors

Richard is represented by galleries in the United Kingdom, Germany, USA and China and has been exhibited in the UK and internationally. His commercial success extends to major commissions, including recent projects for Raffles at The OWO (Old War Office) in London, which led to a British hotels design award.
